Darby Canyon Campout

My student ward wanted to go on a camp out together during the summer semester. Our Bishops wife is on a board of people responsible for the Darby Canyon Girls Camp, located in Darby Canyon just east of Driggs. Earlier in the semester, the two Elders Quorums had gone and stayed the night as an activity, and in the morning did some service in order to get the camp ready for the girls that would be coming starting the following week. In doing that service, we were able to use the camp without having to pay the $300 to rent the camp over night. So when we went up to the camp as a ward, we didn't have to pay the money or do service, but were able to relax and play games the whole time. I went up a couple hours early and tried to catch some fish in the creek that runs through the canyon. The water was butt cold, and there were no fish in there whatsoever. In hiking up the creek however, a large buck jumped out in front of me, and completely cleared the creek. He had some antlers that had started to grow, but he was gone in a flash. Just seeing that made my freezing legs worth it.
At the camp, they have a large metal slide that follows the hill. We were told multiple times not to use anything that would give you more speed. We were also warned not to go in groups. On saturday morning after breakfast, the slide became the thing to do for everyone. I found some wax paper that some girls had hid the week before. I flew down that slide, and ended up twisting my knee a little bit. The next people to follow me were a group of 4 girls. They put their legs on the girl in front of them and slide down in a group. As they landed, one of the girls heard a pop in her ankle and was in instant pain. I went and got my car and we loaded her in and then I drove her home to Rexburg and took her to the hospital. She chipped a piece of bone off her ankle, but it was small enough that the doctor couldn't do anything. She came to church the next day in a wheel chair and with air-casts on both of her ankles. It was fun trip however, and she was all smiles about the situation. Don't worry, my knee is doing fine.
